BACKGROUND:
The Public Works Department is requesting to purchase traffic signal equipment by utilizing the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGACBuy) contract pricing. The purpose of this purchase is to implement a Traffic Signal Re-lamping Program. The program aims to update the existing traffic signal heads, pedestrian signals, and LED bulbs at six (6) signalized intersections annually.
DISCUSSION:
The City staff currently oversees infrastructure at 60 signalized intersections, some of which are around 20 years old. As this equipment ages, staff has identified various concerns with its condition. There's a growing necessity to increase maintenance and repairs to mitigate risks from severe weather events, such as wind and other storm-related issues that are becoming more frequent and intense, which will be achieved by updating outdated equipment. The re-lamping program will consist of replacing obsolete components, including traffic signal heads, pedestrian signals, and LED bulbs, at six intersections annually. The program aims to improve safety and visibility for both motorists and pedestrians. Funding for this initiative was approved in the 2023-2024 Public Works Operating Budget.
