Body
BACKGROUND:
The City of Farmers Branch provides drinking water to all Farmers Branch residents and businesses. Water is provided through a series of pipes, pumps, and storage tanks. Storage tanks can be elevated, ground level, or below ground. In the Farmers Branch, the tanks are elevated or ground level. The total storage capacity of the tanks is approximately 17 million gallons. If water usage is low, water can stratify chemically or thermally within the tanks. Therefore, the water within the tanks needs to be mixed to avoid water quality deterioration, thus protecting public health.
The City of Farmers Branch also operates the wastewater system. Wastewater from residents and businesses flows via gravity through a series of pipes to larger pipes, lift stations, or, ultimately, a wastewater treatment plant. The City of Farmers Branch owns and operates a series of pipes and lift stations; the City does not operate a wastewater treatment plant. Lift stations are constructed at various locations within a city where wastewater has flowed to an elevation that is below the next pipe in the transport system. The purpose of the lift station is to mechanically elevate or "lift" the wastewater to a higher elevation where it can continue its gravitational flow to its ultimate destination, the wastewater treatment plant. Within the lift station, the City utilizes diffusers to aerate the wastewater within the well portion of the facility. This introduces oxygen into the material, which helps break down the grease and, in turn, reduces the City's maintenance costs.
DISCUSSION:
The facilities that currently have this system in place have experienced great improvement in water and wastewater quality. Therefor...
