Title
Discuss an amendment to the Code of Ordinances related to the Vacant Building Registration ordinance.
Body
REQUESTOR:
Councilmember Roger Neal
BACKGROUND:
Staff is providing an update regarding the Vacant Building Registration ordinance at the request of Councilmember Neal. The City of Farmer’s Branch has required the registration of all vacant buildings, including commercial and residential properties. Vacant Building Registration is processed annually and has several requirements, including an inspection, registration fee, and signage identifying a 24-hour contact for property management for concerns or emergencies.
DISCUSSION:
Staff reviewed the existing ordinance and researched peer municipalities’ vacant building registration processes. Limited processes were available as many peer municipalities do not enforce vacant building registration. Following this research, staff worked with the City Attorney to determine updates to the existing Vacant Building Registration language. These amendments implement new requirements for vacant building registration to ensure the safety of the buildings and communities.
