Title

Consider approving Resolution 2024-162, accepting a grant award from the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority under the Catalytic Converter Grant Program to support law enforcement agencies in preventing economic motor vehicle theft; and take appropriate action.

Body

REQUESTOR:

Finance, Fleet, and Facilities Department

BACKGROUND:

The Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority has authorized the issuance of the Fiscal Year 2024 Request for Applications (RFA) related to the Catalytic Converter Grant Program. Senate Bill 244 states that funds deposited to the General Revenue Fund for coordinated regulatory and law enforcement activities intended to detect and prevent catalytic converter theft in the State may be appropriated to the authority for the activities required.

DISCUSSION:

The City of Farmers Branch has been awarded $75,000 in grant funding to purchase FLOCK software and license plate reader technology. These will assist the Police Department with crucial vehicle data to solve and prevent crime related to motor vehicle thefts.

In 2023, property crime offences have exceeded 1,000, with 813 of those directly linked to theft-related incidents. The cameras serve as a force multiplier for our officers, providing real-time insights into suspicious activities and enabling proactive enforcement efforts.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Grant award of $75,000 with no grant match.

DISTRICT:

Citywide
