INTRODUCTION BY THE MAYOR:
On behalf of the City of Farmers Branch City Council, I am honored to recognize and present this ceremonial item to the Farmers Branch Fire Department Medic 133 for their actions in saving the life of a traumatic cardiac arrest victim. Medic 133 is receiving Trauma of the Year by Baylor Grapevine. This commitment to excellence sets a remarkable example for others.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On August 12, 2024, the Farmers Branch Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a trapped person. Upon arrival, the crews found the patient pinned in the vehicle; once extrication could be made, the patient was transported to Baylor Grapevine. The patient had extensive injuries, which required immediate care by the paramedics. M133 conducted needle chest decompression of the right lung due to no breathing sounds, air splinted the whole body due to multiple fractures, obtained bi-lateral large bore IVs, and initiated sequence intubation due to the patient's breathing. Upon approach to the hospital, the patient went into traumatic cardiac arrest. CPR was initiated. Once inside the hospital, the attending ER Physician opened the chest and manually massaged the heart to get a heartbeat back. The patient was quickly then rushed to the operating room. After a couple of months of care at the hospital, the patient was discharged home.
Due to the extent of the injuries sustained, Baylor Grapevine stated that the patient only had a 1% chance of survival. If it were not for the care initiated by the Farmers Branch Fire Department and the care provided at Baylor Grapevine Emergency Room, the patient would not be here today. As a result of their exemplary performance, Medic 133 was honored with the "Trauma of the Year" award from Baylor Grapevine. This recognition is a testament to our EMS personnel's tireless efforts and professionalism.
I would also like to acknowledge the invaluable guidance and support from Dr. Northeim, BEST EMS, the Field Training Officers, the Medical Simulation Program, and the EMS Captain, all of whom contributed to the success of this operation.
EMS Captain Terry Evans will formally recognize Medic 133 - Field Training Officer Jarred List and Firefighter/Paramedic Ranga Johns for their outstanding contributions to this life-saving effort.
