Body
REQUESTOR:
Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Roger Neal
BACKGROUND:
The City of Farmers Branch remains committed to supporting programs and partnerships that enhance the quality of life, strengthen community connections, and expand access to arts and cultural experiences. The Firehouse Theatre is a valued community partner that advances these goals by providing professional theater productions, educational programming, youth camps, and community outreach opportunities that enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.
To support these community benefits, the City entered into a Facility Use Agreement with the Firehouse Theater in 2024. Under this agreement, both the City and The Firehouse Theatre have responsibilities outlined for the maintenance of the facility. Under Section 3.4 “Facility Improvements” of the agreement, “…both the City and the Theatre shall work together to identify any building upgrades and important improvements that shall enhance the functionality of the facility.” This section also notes that the “City is not obligated to install, construct or fund any such upgrades or improvements unless the City Council approves such items and provides funding for the same.”
At the June 16, 2026, City Council meeting, The Firehouse Theatre presented its annual report and identified several facility improvements needed to enhance the patron experience and support theater operations.
The two improvements discussed were:
• Updating the concession/kitchen area, including installation of a new popcorn machine.
• Expanding the existing lobby to improve circulation and accommodate patrons before performances and during intermissions.
DISCUSSION:
Staff have obtained competitive pricing for the kitchen improvements, with quotes ranging from approximately $7,000 to $10,000. These improvements represent a relatively low-cost investment that will enhance theater operations and the overall patron experience while requiring minimal disruption to ongoing programming.
The proposed lobby expansion is a more complex project that requires additional evaluation of design alternatives, operational impacts, and associated costs. Staff is currently exploring the most cost-effective options and will return to the City Council with additional information and recommendations for consideration at a future meeting.
Approval of Resolution No. 2026-092 will authorize the designation of $10,000 for the requested kitchen upgrades.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Unbudgeted amount of $10,000 from the FY 25-26 Hotel/Motel Fund.
