BACKGROUND:
The National League of Cities (NLC) is a national organization that represents cities, towns, and villages across the United States. It works with municipal leaders to advocate for local government interests at the federal level, provide research and policy resources, offer training and professional development, and create opportunities for local officials to collaborate on issues affecting their communities.
The NLC conducts its Annual Business Meeting in conjunction with its annual City Summit. During the Annual Business Meeting, NLC member municipalities participate in organizational business, including matters requiring a vote of the membership.
The selection of an official voting delegate is made by participating municipalities to allow the chosen delegate the opportunity to vote as a representative of the City on matters affecting local organizations and NLC’s member municipalities.
DISCUSSION:
At the October 20 City Council meeting, Councilwoman Tina Bennett-Burton expressed interest in representing the City of Farmers Branch at the National League of Cities (NLC) and requested that an item be placed on a future Council agenda for discussion and consideration.
To participate in voting at the NLC Annual Business Meeting, the City must designate an authorized voting delegate. The designated representative will be responsible for casting the City's vote on matters presented to the NLC membership during the meeting.
This agenda item provides the City Council an opportunity to consider the designation of an official voting delegate to represent Farmers Branch in NLC's formal decision-making process.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approximately $2,200 in total travel costs for the chosen delegate.
