BACKGROUND:
Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) has been widely used by Fire Departments, including the City of Farmers Branch, for decades to suppress flammable liquid fires, particularly in aviation, military, and industrial settings. The effectiveness of this method stems from Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), synthetic chemicals that resist heat, water, and oil, making them ideal for extinguishing fuel-based fires. However, recent scientific evidence has linked PFAS exposure to serious health risks, including increased rates of testicular, kidney, and thyroid cancers, as well as thyroid disease and other health issues. These findings have gained significant attention in national news, highlighting the occupational risks faced by firefighters and other personnel who regularly handle AFFF.
To ensure that the Fire department remains compliant with emerging regulations and prioritizes the health and safety of Fire personnel, we are transitioning to PFAS-free Class B firefighting foams. The DFW Airport Fire Training Center, a recognized leader in aviation firefighting training, has developed a comprehensive program to train fire departments on these new foam formulations. This training will equip our personnel with the knowledge and skills to effectively use PFAS-free foams while maintaining our operational readiness for flammable liquid fire suppression, particularly in high-risk environments.
The Interlocal Agreement with DFW International Airport, Department of Public Safety, will enable our personnel to attend the training.
