Body
REQUESTOR:
Councilwoman Tina Bennett-Burton
BACKGROUND:
At the request of Councilwoman Bennett-Burton, staff will present the City’s fleet replacement guidelines and schedule.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Farmers Branch is committed to maintaining a reliable, cost-effective fleet by implementing a structured replacement schedule. The City replaces vehicles and equipment based on age, usage, condition, operational requirements, and fiscal responsibility.
The City has implemented Fleet Replacement Guidelines to ensure that all City vehicles and equipment are maintained and replaced in a timely and cost-effective manner. This initiative is key to the City’s commitment to public safety, fiscal stewardship, staff support, and service efficiency.
Following the guidelines, each vehicle type has a defined replacement schedule based on its use, complexity, and safety requirements. For example:
- Police Pursuit Vehicles - every 3 years
- Fire Apparatus - every 10 years (up to 15 years reserve)
- Heavy Equipment (Backhoe, Sewer Trucks, etc.) - every 8 years or by age
- Trailers - every 12 years
- General Fleet - every 10 years, or 100,000 miles/10,000 hours
This schedule ensures the City proactively replaces high-use or safety-critical vehicles before performance declines or costs rise.
