INTRODUCTION BY THE MAYOR:
On behalf of the City of Farmers Branch City Council, I am honored to recognize and present this ceremonial item to Dr. Don Smith for his leadership as part of the Citizen on Patrol Program.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Don began the Farmers Branch police volunteer journey as a Citizen on Patrol (COP) Team Lead, a role he held for three years before stepping into the position of COP Liaison. Over the past 17 years in this role, Don has been instrumental in developing and expanding the police volunteer program. Under his leadership, he and his team implemented a variety of initiatives, including Patrol Housewatch, Warrant Calling, and the Information Desk, among others. He developed a training program for new volunteers, led the classes to prepare new members, and managed the daily activities and equipment for the entire team. It isn’t a stretch to say that the Farmers Branch Police Department COP program you see today is a reflection of Don’s years of dedication and attention to detail.
Don can be seen at almost every city event, patrolling the grounds and interacting with members of the public. He is always looking for new volunteers and would recruit those interested in attending the Farmers Branch Citizens Police Academy. He is also a regular fixture inside of the Police Department where he spends hours tracking the activity of the team, scheduling events, and creating policies and procedures for new responsibilities.
Thanks to Don's vision and dedication, the COP program has grown and evolved into the robust and impactful initiative it is today. We sincerely wish to thank him for his many years of dedicated service to the City of Farmers Branch.
