BACKGROUND:
Over 20 years ago, the City of Farmers Branch partnered with the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District to install fiber optic cables along selected street easements. These cables provide essential connections between various City facilities and support our internet, voice, and data communications.

However, at the time of installation, detailed records regarding the fiber's location and specifications were not created, and cables were installed without "tracer wires," which are standard today in the industry to help locate underground fiber. As a result, it is currently difficult and time-consuming to identify the fiber's exact location, especially when street construction or utility work takes place nearby.

DISCUSSION:
The City plans to expand its fiber network to support improved connectivity and management for traffic signals and utility infrastructure. Before doing so, it is essential to gain a clear and accurate understanding of the existing fiber network.

This proposed project will:
* Locate and map the existing fiber optic cables.
* Document the condition and technical characteristics of the network.
* Install standardized surface markers to indicate the presence of fiber below.
* Provide the City's GIS (Geographic Information Systems) department with digital mapping files compatible with our existing systems.

Completing this audit will help ensure:
* Better use of existing infrastructure.
* Increased reliability and data capacity between City facilities.
* Greater protection of fiber assets during future construction or utility work.

FISCAL IMPACT:
The total unbudgeted cost of this project will not exceed $110,000. Funds will be allocated in the Public ...
