Title

Receive a presentation from Public Works on the traffic signal operations at the Intersection of Denton Drive and Valley View Lane.

Body

REQUESTOR:

Councilman David Reid

BACKGROUND:

Due to ongoing roadway construction projects and increased volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, the intersection of Denton Drive and Valley View Lane experiences significant intermittent traffic congestion. The closure of Pike Street for the TxDOT’s I-35E expansion project has reduced traffic flow options between Denton Drive and the I-35E northbound feeder road. Currently, Farmers Branch Lane and Valley View Lane are the only ways to access the feeder road from the DART Station Area. The ongoing IH-35E expansion project has further complicated the situation by using temporary traffic signal programs and reduced lanes on Valley View Lane at the I-35E underpass.

The DART train signals during train crossings can also exacerbate the east/west traffic on Valley View Lane in the DART Station Area. The increase in weekend activities related to sports events at the new Stars facility has generated higher pedestrian and traffic volumes, resulting in increased traffic delays at the intersection as vehicles yield to pedestrians crossing at the signalized intersection. Public Works has maximized green light time on Denton Drive, but relief is limited until the IH-35E project concludes in winter 2025. Additionally, Public Works is collaborating with the North Central Texas Council of Government to explore potential roadway improvements and possible grant opportunities once the IH-35E project is completed.
