BACKGROUND:
The Tree City USA program was founded in 1976 to celebrate towns and cities committed to growing their urban canopy. Led by the Arbor Day Foundation, with partners at USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, it provides the foundational framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their tree cover.
DISCUSSION:
To maintain the City’s Tree City USA status, the Parks and Recreation Department staff must annually fulfill requirements set forth by the Arbor Day Foundation. One of those requirements is to recognize Arbor Day by proclamation. Since Arbor Day is recognized in Texas in the fall due to better tree planting conditions, Texas Arbor Day will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024. Farmers Branch has been a Tree City USA-recognized city since 1984.
