Title
Receive a presentation from Code Enforcement and discuss an amendment to the Code of Ordinances related to parking regulations for oversized vehicles in residential areas.
Body
REQUESTOR:
Councilman Roger Neal
BACKGROUND:
At the request of Councilman Neal, staff will provide an update on parking regulations in response to concerns regarding enforcing oversized vehicles on private property in residential areas.
Currently, the City does not have any regulations governing oversized vehicles on private property. However, a significant increase in the number of recreational vehicles, trailers, and commercial vehicles has been seen in these neighborhoods. On December 10, 2024, City staff provided an overview to the City Council of existing parking regulations. The City Council made a recommendation to reduce the length and size of allowed vehicles in residential areas and that additional public input was needed regarding the proposed changes to the ordinance. The City Council will have the opportunity to receive public input at a future Town Hall meeting. At today’s session, staff will provide an update on the existing regulations and practices.
DISCUSSION:
A review of the current ordinance and research into how neighboring municipalities manage oversized vehicle regulations have been conducted. Many municipalities enforce such ordinances, successfully reducing vehicle overcrowding in residential areas. City staff is proposing amendments to our existing parking ordinance to include regulations of oversized vehicles and to prohibit certain vehicles from being parked on private property in residential zones. These updates will allow enforcement against any vehicle that exceeds 1 ½ tons and will prohibit vehicles that are over nine feet in width or 23 feet in length from parking on private property in residential areas.
