Title
Discuss City of Farmers Branch-owned parcels and Builders of Hope.
Body
REQUESTOR:
Mayor Pro Tem Omar Roman, Councilwoman Tina Bennett-Burton
BACKGROUND:
In 1999, the City of Farmers Branch launched the Neighborhood Renaissance Program to stimulate residential development by acquiring and offering select lots to homebuilders. The program aimed to catalyze revitalization and attract new residential construction in targeted areas.
In 2009, the initiative was refocused on the Branch Crossing neighborhood, where it remained active until the City phased out of the area in 2014. In 2017, the City established a new target area, the Valwood Area, continuing its efforts to encourage redevelopment and homeownership.
Most recently, in 2023, the City partnered with a nonprofit organization, Builders of Hope, to construct five homes in this area, furthering its commitment to expanding access to affordable housing.
DISCUSSION:
The City currently owns 22 residential lot parcels available for sale - 20 in the Valwood Area and 2 in Pepper Hill. City staff is seeking direction to continue partnering with Builders of Hope to develop all available parcels within the current target areas as part of an expanded affordable housing initiative.
Builders of Hope will present and be available to answer any questions.
