INTRODUCTION BY THE MAYOR:
On behalf of the City of Farmers Branch City Council, I am honored to recognize Lights Out Nights in Farmers Branch.
BACKGROUND:
Every year, birds migrate north in the spring and south in the fall, with the majority flying at night. As they pass over larger cities during their migrations, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and skyglow, which can lead to exhaustion and death.
In alignment with the City’s Strategic Plan and Sustainability Plan, the Sustainability Committee recommended a proclamation to encourage residents to turn off non-essential lights during peak bird migration periods. The proclamation would raise awareness of the impact of light pollution on wildlife and encourage residents and businesses to act to reduce migratory bird mortality.
For the last two years, the city has issued a proclamation in collaboration with Audubon Texas to support the statewide Lights Out, Texas Campaign.
