BACKGROUND:
The City of Farmers Branch is committed to prioritizing traffic safety, particularly in school zones where the risk can be heightened during peak hours. School zone beacons serve as a critical tool to alert drivers to reduced speed limits and increased pedestrian activity, helping to reinforce safe driving behaviors and reduce the likelihood of accidents. By maintaining and investing in these traffic control measures, the City demonstrates its ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable roadway users and promoting a safe environment for travel to and from the schools in the community.

The City's existing school zone beacon system relies on an outdated radio-based communication network that is nearing obsolescence. Its limited communication capabilities restrict accessibility and reduce operational flexibility. In addition, the system does not support real-time status monitoring or automated failure alerts. As a result, issues such as power outages, low battery levels, or equipment malfunctions are typically discovered through routine inspections or public reports, often leading to delayed response times.

Beacon systems that utilize cellular communication rather than traditional radio-based technology provide enhanced operational capabilities through remote access across multiple devices. This allows for real-time system monitoring and automatic failure notifications, improving overall efficiency and significantly reducing response times. As a result, these advanced systems increase reliability and ensure that school zone safety infrastructure remains consistently operational and effective.
