Title

Discuss an amendment to the Code of Ordinances related to parking regulations for oversized vehicles in residential areas.

Body

REQUESTOR:

Councilman Roger Neal

BACKGROUND:

On April 1, 2025, Code Enforcement presented a proposal to amend the parking regulations by adding a section for oversized vehicles.

The City currently has no regulations regarding oversized vehicles parked on private property. However, there has been a significant increase in the number of recreational vehicles, trailers, and commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods. During the study session on April 1, 2025, staff were asked to explore the possibility of implementing restrictions on certain types of vehicles, reducing the allowable length of vehicles, and establishing a grace period for residents.

DISCUSSION:

A review of the current ordinance and examination of how neighboring municipalities regulate oversized vehicles has been conducted. Many municipalities effectively enforce such ordinances to reduce vehicle overcrowding in residential areas. City staff are proposing amendments to our existing parking ordinance to include regulations for oversized vehicles and to prohibit certain types of vehicles from being parked on private property in residential zones.

Proposed updates to the ordinance include the following items:

Prohibit any vehicle that exceeds 1.5 tons

Prohibit vehicles such as RVs, boats, box trucks, tow trucks, dump trucks, trailers

Prohibit any other vehicles that exceed nine feet in width or 21 feet in length from parking on private property in residential areas

A 24-month grace period to inform residents of the new regulations and to provide adequate time to make arrangements to relocate vehicles.
