BACKGROUND:
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) operates the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program. The program includes a rating system for cities which helps track their progress towards sustainability objectives.
The City of Farmers Branch was selected along with fifteen other local governments for the 2025 LEED for Cities Certification Cohort. Through the cohort, city staff have worked to compile documentation to meet the requirements of the certification program.
On August 22, 2025, city staff submitted the preliminary application to USGBC for review. The preliminary review is expected to be completed by early October. The City will then have approximately one month to provide any edits or additional documentation that is requested to be included in the final application.
City staff will provide details on the preliminary application and an update on the process.
