BACKGROUND:
Public Works staff identify drinking water and wastewater system improvements each year as part of the continual evaluation and maintenance of the systems. Typically, staff designs two projects per year: Group A and Group B.
Earlier this year, in February 2024, Group A was approved to replace older cast iron pipes (approximately 6,635 linear feet of 6- and 8-inch cast iron) along the segments of Pyramin Drive, Heartside Place, Janwood Lane, and Tom Field Road. Construction Group A Water Main Replacement began at the end of April and is less than 5% complete at this time.
At this City Council meeting, the staff is presenting Group B projects: five water mains and one sewer main replacement. These projects aim to focus on older cast iron water mains and a deteriorated sewer line. The projects are located along Goodland Place, Goodland Street, Dennis Lane, Richland Avenue, and Tom Field Road segments. The water mains scheduled to be replaced in these locations are approximately 6,430 linear feet of 6- and 8-inch cast iron mains and approximately 1,200 linear feet of clay sanitary sewer pipe installed in the mid-1950s to late 1960s. The proposed replacement pipe is PVC. The project followed the bidding process per the City of Farmers Branch purchasing guidelines.
DISCUSSION:
The Public Works Department received one bid for the Water Main Replacement 2024 Group B Project, and the sole bid met specifications. J&L Construction, LLC submitted the sole bid in the amount of $3,078,150. Reference checks were performed by staff.
