BACKGROUND:
As part of the City Council's strategic planning workshop held in February 2025, the Council identified developing a community garden on City property. Currently, the City has a Community Garden that is managed by the City but is run by community volunteers. During the Strategic Planning Session in February 2026, the City Council identified a community garden with integrated composting and mulch management capabilities as a priority initiative under the Connected Neighborhoods strategic objective. Connected Neighborhoods is one of the City's five strategic objectives and focuses on enhancing the quality of life in Farmers Branch through strategic reinvestment in neighborhoods, the creation of meaningful public spaces, environmental stewardship, and initiatives that foster community pride and engagement.
In response to this strategic direction, City staff have conducted research and evaluated potential approaches for implementing a community garden program that aligns with the Council's vision. This effort included assessing operational considerations, identifying potential site opportunities, evaluating best practices from comparable communities, and exploring opportunities to incorporate sustainable practices through composting and mulch integration to support long-term program success.
To reduce the City's financial investment, staff have begun identifying external funding opportunities to support the implementation of the community garden. Much of the initial construction can be completed in-house using existing City personnel, equipment, and available materials, minimizing project costs.
For the remaining project needs, staff have contacted multiple organizations to explore sponsorship and grant opportunities. Although many funding programs will not open until later in 2026, these discussions have provided valuable insight into future fund...
