Presentation of a Proclamation designating the month of January 2024 as “Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month” in Farmers Branch.

With the City Council and City Manager’s support, the Fire Department has implemented several cancer prevention measures:
• Multiple Standard Operating Procedures related to cancer awareness and prevention, safe use of bunker gear, and respiratory protection
• Bunker gear extractors in each fire station
• Bunker gear dryers in each fire station
• Apparatus exhaust removal system
• Each firefighter issued a second set of bunker gear
• All certified personnel have completed the Firefighter Cancer Support Network safety training course
• National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 medical exam for every firefighter
We will conduct the NFPA 1582 medical exams this fiscal year in April/May 2024. This medical exam has helped identify cancer and other medical issues at an early stage in several of our firefighters, which has allowed our firefighters the opportunity to seek treatment and be able to continue serving our wonderful community!
