Title
Consider accepting a donation from David Austin Roses Limited relative to a proposed David Austin Trial Rose Garden in Gussie Field Watterworth Park; and take appropriate action.
Body
BACKGROUND:
David Austin Roses Limited from the U.K. has selected three sites in the United States to conduct rose trials of the David Austin Roses(r). With the acceptance of this donation, Farmers Branch will be home to the southern trials. The trial garden will be located in Gussie Field Watterworth Park. David Austin Roses(r) are modern roses that have incorporated the charm of the old garden roses with the shrubby growth habit and range of color that is sought by today's gardeners. These English roses have gained a strong following in the United States making this trial an attraction for gardeners.
DISCUSSION:
The trial will consist of approximately 70 different varieties planted in two blocks to evaluate the adaptability to this climate, susceptibility to rose pests and the floral display. David Austin Roses Limited will donate the materials to install the test, including the soil amendments, roses, and materials to build support structures for the climbers. Part of this donation will include $1,500 provided to the City each year of the trials to cover the cost of fertilizer and pesticides used in the maintenance of the roses. The trial will last three years with a possibility of four. All the thriving plants and materials will become the property of the City. The estimated value of this gift is $28,500.00.
These roses will be evaluated to identify varieties that are more sustainable and require fewer resources than the typical hybrid tea rose that is well known today. Farmers Branch will be the only place in the South with these roses and this trial will further Farmers Branch's place in the rose world.
