BACKGROUND:
The Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) is the leading organization of Parks and Recreation professionals in Texas. TRAPS consists of approximately 2,000 parks and recreation professionals, students and citizen advocates who share a common passion for advocacy, education, networking and offering quality services to their communities.
The highest honor that TRAPS bestows on a facility is the designation of Lone Star Legacy Park. A park that receives this designation is one that holds special prominence in the local community and the state of Texas. These parks have endured the test of time and have become iconic to those who have visited, played and rested on their grounds.
DISCUSSION:
At the recent TRAPS conference, Gussie Field Watterworth Park was designated by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society as a Lone Star Legacy Park. Gussie Field Watterworth Park, commonly referred to as "Gussie" is one of the oldest and most beloved parks in Farmers Branch.
Gussie continues to provide extraordinary experiences and memories for those that have visited. Gussie has been a favorite of Farmers Branch residents since the mid 1950s. The City has been able to grow the Park, make numerous enhancements, and improve the access and usability. The transformation of this one-time farmland to a varied, natural park in an urban setting, with historical ties to the community is a testament to the vision and dedication of City leaders past and present.
Farmers Branch is truly The City in a Park. The Lone Star Legacy Park designation is possible because Farmers Branch is and has been blessed with hard working and dedicated elected officials and board members who want to set Farmers Branch apart and provide quality of life opportunities that are second to none.
