Title

Consider adopting Ordinance No. 3491, cancelling the May 5, 2018 General Election for City Council District 3 and District 5, declaring unopposed candidates elected to office; and take appropriate action.

Body

BACKGROUND:

The City Council called a General Election on February 6, 2018 for the purpose of electing Council Members to District 3 and District 5.   City Council District 3 Incumbent John Norwood, and City Council District 5 Incumbent Mike Bomgardner both submitted applications for place on the ballot.

The City Secretary received no other applications for place on the ballot, or write in candidacy.  Therefore; the City Secretary certifies that each candidate is unopposed.  The Texas Election Code §2.053 authorizes a governing body to adopt an order declaring each unopposed candidate elected to office and allows the City to cancel the General Election.

RECOMMENDATION:
City Administration recommends the City Council adopt Ordinance No. 3491, which accepts the City Secretary’s written certification, and declares each unopposed candidate as elected to office, and cancels the May 5, 2018 General Election.

POSSIBLE COUNCIL ACTION:

1. I move to approve Ordinance No. 3491.

2. I move to approve Ordinance No. 3491, with modifications.

3. I move to table the issue for further study or take no action.
