Receive a quarterly update presentation from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

BACKGROUND:
The City Council directed various boards and commission to provide quarterly updates. These quarterly updates allow City Council to gain a better understanding of items that the boards and commissions are working on, and for the boards and commission to seek direction from City Council related to any items.


DISCUSSION:
Jason O'Quinn, Planning and Zoning Commission Chair, will present information related to the Commission's 2018 work plan, past accomplishments, and ways in which the Commission's actions support City Council's Guiding Principles.

Additionally, the Commission is seeking follow-up direction from City Council at the meeting on April 3, 2018, regarding two items that were discussed at the City Council/Planning and Zoning Commission Joint Meeting held on October 23, 2017:
1. Quality standards for multi-family; and
2. Alternate types of durable exterior building materials (residential and commercial).

There was much discussion at the joint meeting related to both items above, and several Commissioners came away from the meeting with a strong impression that they should be working on these two items, but confirmation from City Council is requested.

Quality standards for multi-family uses could be included within the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance, similar to what was done for hotel uses where additional requirements were established within that ordinance. Where multi-family uses are allowed in certain zoning districts, the regulations within the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance would apply.

Regarding exterior building materials, these materials are regulated within the City's Code of Ordinances. However, there are instances when zoning codes overlap on this issue due to some planned development districts (PDs) regulating exterior building materials.
