Title

Discuss the upcoming City Council quarterly update presentation.

Body

BACKGROUND:

The City Council has requested that the Planning and Zoning Commission provide quarterly update presentations to them, with the next presentation occurring on August 21, 2018.  The purpose of these presentations is to inform the Council of:

                     The mission and goals of the Commission and how that aligns with the Council’s guiding principles for the City;

                     Items the Commission is currently working on and/or in the future;

                     Communicate useful information that the Commission believes is of benefit to the Council;

                     Accomplishments; and

                     Seek direction from the Council related to any particular items.

The presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length, and should address “big picture” items related to the Commission’s work.

The presentations will occur during the Council’s regularly scheduled study session meetings, and will be given by the Commission chairman (or alternate commissioner if the chairman is not available).  Other members of the Commission are welcome to attend the Council meeting.

At this time, staff is seeking initial feedback from the Commission at its meeting on July 16, 2018 regarding possible content that the Commission would like to have included in the presentation for the Council meeting.  Potential items that the Commission may want to consider advising the City Council about include:

                     IH-35 Corridor Market Study Analysis including the Commission’s recommended next steps as it relates to the future of the corridor (note: this is related to City Council Critical Business Outcome #1 - Implement a vision for the Central corridor and developing/redeveloping the East Side.)

                     Residential setbacks and related regulations (City Council initiative)

                     Monthly updates on previous development cases considered by the Commission and the final outcome at City Council

                     Received training related to the Texas Open Meetings Act

                     Received training related to the city’s zoning, development and permitting process

                     Discussed landscaping requirements for single-family residences (particularly new home construction)

                     Update regarding newly elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman

                     Revised work plan for 2018

Based upon the direction received from the Commission, staff will prepare a draft presentation to share with the Commission at its meeting on August 13, 2018 and seek additional feedback in order to refine the presentation.  Staff will continue to work with the Commission’s chairman for any additional presentation refinements.

Attached for the Commission’s reference, is the April 3, 2018 presentation slides that were presented to Council.

These quarterly presentations are in addition to the quarterly luncheons that the Council is hosting with the City’s boards and commissions chairpersons.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends the Planning and Zoning Commission provide initial direction related to possible content to include in the City Council quarterly presentation for August 21, 2018.
