Title

Consider adopting Ordinance No. 3518 Amending Chapter 18 - Animals of the Code of Ordinances in its entirety,  providing for regulations relating to the keeping of animals within the City; and take appropriate action.

 

Body

BACKGROUND:

Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances has been in effect since 1969, with a variety of codes amended in part over time.  The Animal Services staff along with the Animal Services Advisory Committee has taken a comprehensive approach to reviewing Chapter 18 and has made recommendations to update the regulations and reformat the structure of the chapter.

 

DISCUSSION:

This ordinance is a comprehensive update to the Chapter.  The update reformats the Chapter consolidating information into relevant articles and sections and updates regulations and definitions.  Some of the updates are as follows:

                     Defines a dangerous dog

                     Mandates all dogs and cats are microchipped

                     Mandates all dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, providing exceptions

                     Mandates all dogs and cats are vaccinated

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

City Administration recommends adopting Ordinance No. 3518 Amending Chapter 18 - Animals of the Code of Ordinances.

 

POSSIBLE COUNCIL ACTION:

1. I move to approve Ordinance No. 3518 amending Chapter 18 - Animals of the Code of Ordinances.

2. I move to approve Ordinance No. 3518 amending Chapter 18 - Animals of the Code of Ordinances, with modifications.

3. I move to table the issue for further study or take no action.
