Title

Presentation of the Star of Texas Award to Officer Thinh Nguyen.

Body

BACKGROUND:

The Texas Legislature created the Star of Texas Award in 2003, through House Bill 1937, to honor and commemorate individuals who made profound commitments while performing their duties as peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders.  The award honors the men and women of Texas who have been killed or sustained injuries in the line of duty.

In October of 2017, Officer Nguyen encountered a suspicious person in an apartment building in the 4000 block of Alpha Road.  Officer Nguyen ascertained that the person was not a resident and did not belong in the common area of the building.  When the person was asked to leave, the individual pulled a knife and stabbed Officer Nguyen in the neck.  Officer Nguyen engaged in a fight for his life as the suspect continued to assault him.  Officer Nguyen refused to give up, despite his serious neck wound, and was ultimately able to fight off his attacker who fled, but was later caught and arrested.

State Representative Matt Rinaldi of House District 115 is here to present Officer Nguyen with the Star of Texas Award.
