Title

Presentation and discussion related to placemaking.

Body

BACKGROUND:

In preparation for the Planning and Zoning Commission’s upcoming retreat on Saturday, November 3, 2018, staff will be making a presentation to the Commission related to placemaking.  Placemaking is the process of creating quality places where people want to live, work, play, shop, learn, and visit.

The presentation will address the following items:

                     Placemaking - What is it?

o                     Definition

o                     Where/how it occurs

o                     Characteristics

                     Importance of Placemaking to Communities

o                     Benefits

Power of 10 (from Project for Public Spaces)

                     Examples of Placemaking

Additionally, D Magazine published a special edition titled Dallas and The New Urbanism featuring several articles related to new urbanism principles - including placemaking - and how cities within the Dallas/Fort Worth area have embodied new urbanism principles.  Attached is “For Better or Worse” (by Julia Bunch), which features several area developments that have successfully accomplished or failed at implementing placemaking characteristics.

Presentation and discussion related to this item may be continued at the regular meeting agenda in the event the Commission does not have sufficient time in the study session meeting.
