Title

Discuss current city smoking regulations and possible amendments

Body

BACKGROUND:

Smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer causing 80% of the diagnoses according to the Dallas Ft. Worth Hospital Council.  Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are toxic, and at least 70 that cause cancer.  Several cities in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area have enacted smoking bans.  Some of the cities are Dallas, Arlington, Flower Mound, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, and Little Elm.

At the request of Councilman Blackson, staff will discuss the public health implications of smoking and vaping as well provide statistics regarding demographic usage as well as current smoking regulations for the City of Farmers Branch. In addition, staff will present a synopsis of the City of Dallas smoking ordinance. Staff is looking for City Council direction as needed for further regulation.
