Title

Discuss city food service regulations and possible amendments including, but not limited to, regulating single use food ware and publication of inspection scores

Body

BACKGROUND:

The City of Farmers Branch Environmental Health division conducts the permitting and inspection of food establishments in Farmers Branch.  Food establishments include a variety of food industries such as restaurants, school cafeterias, grocery stores, bakeries, and convenience stores.  Typically food establishments are inspected three times per year to determine the food establishment’s sanitation level.  These inspections provide a snap shot of the establishment’s sanitation and procedures.

At the request of Councilman Blackson, staff has surveyed the practice of posting the latest inspection score at the entrance of all food establishments.  Posting the latest score at the entrance of the food establishment would heighten public awareness regarding the potential sanitation level of the facility.

Staff was also requested to discuss options regarding single use or take away containers used by food establishments and the environmental impact these items have when not properly disposed.
