Title

Recognition of Farmers Branch Fire Department Medic 133 and Carrollton Engine 115 for their actions in saving the life of a cardiac arrest victim on October 9, 2018

Body

BACKGROUND:

On October 9, 2018 Farmers Branch Fire Department Medic 133 and Carrollton Fire Rescue Engine 115 were dispatched to an unconscious person at the 2200 block of Luna Road in Carrollton, Texas. On arrival, Medic 133 found a female patient lying on the floor with by-standers performing CPR.   After initial assessment was performed the cardiac monitor showed that the patient was in ventricular fibrillation. This heart rhythm requires immediate defibrillation and administration of anti-arrhythmic medications. Multiple rounds of medication and defibrillation were delivered while in-route to Las Colinas Medical Center. When M133 arrived at the Las Colinas ER the patient had converted into a sinus rhythm that generated a weak radial pulse.

The patient was seen in the ED and intubated by the ED physician. The patient was started on the hypothermia protocol in the ED and transferred to ICU. Hypothermia protocol was completed and the patient remained intubated due to pulmonary edema. The patient was extubated 2 days after being admitted to the hospital and was able to maintain their airway on their own. Patient received continuous care and had an internal defibrillator placed on Day 8 and they were discharged home on Day 9.

At tonight’s Council Meeting, Las Colinas Medical Center will recognize Farmers Branch Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedics Isaac Chan and Richard Snell (Medic 133) and Scott Farler, Marcus Watson, and Michael Pease of Carrollton Fire Rescue’s E-115.

The joint Carrollton and Farmers Branch response that produced this exceptional outcome is a direct result of the Automatic Aid agreement in-place between our cities, and the creation of the North Texas Emergency Communications Center by Addison, Carrollton, Coppell and Farmers Branch.
