Title

Discuss Emerging Trends Impacting City Land Use Policy

Body

BACKGROUND:

At the November 6 City Council meeting, a public hearing was conducted to discuss adopting Ordinance No. 3540 to amend the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to allow vehicle dispatch and storage uses. This led to a deeper discussion about emerging trends that have the ability to impact City policy, land use, and zoning. Staff was directed to gather more information about the emerging trends impacting City land use policy and report back to Council.

DISCUSSION:

While researching emerging trends impacting City land use policy, two major focus areas began to emerge: sharing economy and smart cities. Staff will define smart cities and the sharing economy, review examples in each area, then discuss some of the potential policy implications in each of these areas. Council will have the opportunity to discuss how these trends and their potential impact to the City, and provide further direction for staff about moving forward in these areas.
