Title

Consider accepting a donation in the amount of $1,700 to fund a park bench and tree at the Farmers Branch Skate Park in memory of Shelby Hemstock

Body

BACKGROUND:

Shelby Hemstock passed away January 27, 2019 at the age of 27. Shelby grew up in Farmers Branch and participated in the City’s youth programs as a child. At a young age, Shelby took up skateboarding. As a teenager still passionate about the sport, Shelby advocated for a Skate Park in Farmers Branch. During the planning stages of the Park, Shelby acted as the liaison between the Farmers Branch skating community and City staff. When the Skate Park came to fruition, Shelby volunteered his time assisting City staff in coordinating various events and competitions at the Skate Park. In his twenties, Shelby started to travel and live abroad, but when he returned home to visit family and friends, he was often seen at the Skate Park.

DISCUSSION:

Shelby’s family raised $1,700 to fund a tree and “City in the Park” bench. They would like the tree and bench placed close to the Skate Park.

RECOMMENDATION:

City Administration recommends accepting the donation in the amount of $1,700 to fund a tree and park bench in memory of Shelby Hemstock.
