Title
Consider approving Resolution No. 2019-165 approving the submission of the grant application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for funding for the Summer Funshine program

Body

BACKGROUND:
The Summer Funshine Program serves approximately 300 children ages 6-12 each summer. The program meets at the Farmers Branch Community Recreation Center Monday-Friday 7:30 am-6 pm (excluding July 4) the entirety of C-FBISD's summer break. The Program is comprised of 80-85% residents and 15-20% non-residents who have the opportunity to fill any remaining slots. Program activities include swimming, fitness activities, arts and crafts, themed parties, weekly field trips, onsite entertainment, park visits, Manske Library's Summer Reading Program, and more. For the majority of the Program, free breakfast and lunch are provided through the C-FBISD's Summer Food Service Program.

DISCUSSION:
The Community Outdoor Outreach Program (CO-OP) grant provides funding to local governments and non-profit organizations for programming that introduces under-served populations to environmental and conservation programs as well as Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) mission oriented outdoor activities.

The Parks and Recreation Department would like to apply for the $50,000 CO-OP grant to supplement and enhance the Summer Funshine Program through recreational and educational opportunities that support TPWD's mission 'to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations'.

City Administration recommends approval of Resolution 2019-165 approving the submission of the grant application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for funding for the Summer Funshine Program.
