BACKGROUND:
Household hazardous waste consists of various chemicals residents can purchase and use at their homes but are of such nature that disposal in a municipal solid waste landfill should be discouraged. The City of Farmers Branch as well as many other cities contract with Dallas County to provide alternative household hazardous waste disposal services. Dallas County has a facility where residents of participating cities may take the household hazardous waste items to be properly disposed. Dallas County also provides mobile household hazardous waste events to cities that contract for this service. The City of Farmers Branch contracts with Dallas County to provide a one event per year in Farmers Branch.

DISCUSSION:
The current household hazardous waste interlocal agreement between Farmers Branch and Dallas County is a one year renewal that expires on September 30, 2021. The proposed agreement is another one-year renewal interlocal agreement. The fiscal year 2022 household hazardous waste budget has been approved by Dallas County Commissioners Court Order #2021-0665. The City has budgeted $44,500 in the FY 2021-2022 Budget for household hazardous waste services.

FISCAL IMPACT:
Budgeted Financial Impact: $44,500 in Sustainability and Public Health Account 4124-630070.

RECOMMENDATION:
City Administration recommends that City Council approve Resolution No. 2021-124 Authorizing the City Manager to execute an interlocal agreement between the City of Farmers Branch and Dallas County for household hazardous waste disposal.
