BACKGROUND:
Every year, birds migrate north in the spring and south in the fall, with the majority flying at night. As they pass over larger cities during their migrations, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and skyglow, which can lead to exhaustion and death.
In alignment with the City’s Strategic Plan and Sustainability Plan, the Sustainability Committee recommended a proclamation be presented to encourage residents to turn off non-essential lights during peak bird migration periods. The proclamation will raise awareness of the impact of light pollution on wildlife and encourage residents and businesses to act to reduce migratory bird mortality.
